We celebrate the global importance of wetlands and their protection with a major announcement. The European Union has released the official Wetland Map of Europe to the general public.
Understanding and protecting wetlands is vital for biodiversity conservation and global ecological balance. The RAMSAR Convention, signed on February 2, 1971 in Iran, is an international effort dedicated to protecting these valuable ecosystems. Wetlands encompass an impressive variety of habitats, from marshes and meadows to peat bogs and waters, whether still or flowing, fresh or brackish. In Europe, 1134 wetlands are designated, covering a total area of 28 480 202 hectares.
Romania joined the RAMSAR Convention on September 21, 1991, designating the Danube Delta as the first protected wetland. It remains the largest RAMSAR area in the country, covering 674,000 hectares. At national level, we have 20 wetlands totaling 1,177,748 hectares.
The aim of the RAMSAR Convention is to ensure the conservation and wise use of wetlands through local and national action and international cooperation. This contributes to global sustainable development. The most recent strategic plan of the Convention is the 2022 Fourth Strategic Plan for 2016 - 2024.
Protecting wetlands is not only a national responsibility, but a global commitment to a sustainable future. EPC Environmental Consultancy is dedicated to supporting these efforts through specialized advice and active involvement in wetland conservation and restoration projects.
